Amtrak launches Borealis service for expanded travel between St. Paul, Chicago, Milwaukee
CBS 58 ST. PAUL, Minn. (CBS 58) -- Amtrak has announced the upcoming Borealis train service, offering an expanded route option between St. Paul and Chicago, passing through Milwaukee.
The new service begins Tuesday, May 21.
Originating midday from St. Paul and late morning from Chicago, Amtrak announced in a Wednesday, May 1 press release that the Borealis trains are designed to enhance connectivity and comfort for travelers across the Midwest.
Craig Thompson, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary, emphasized the collaborative efforts that made this expansion possible.
"Doubling the frequency of this service will better connect the businesses, universities and tourist attractions along this corridor," Thompson stated in the press release.
He also highlighted the significant role of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in facilitating this expansion, noting, "We will continue to work with federal and state partners to explore more passenger rail options in Wisconsin."
The trains will stop at current Empire Builder and Hiawatha stops, with fares starting at $41. Coach, Business Class and a café car seating options will be available.
The service is backed by the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois with the goal of bolstering the regional transportation network.
