SOMERS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An elderly couple is rushed to the hospital after an encounter with a home invasion suspect.

It all happened near the area of 39th Avenue and 18th street.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office says it was the sound of breaking glass that lead to the terrifying encounter.

“The only description I have right now is average size, wearing dark clothing, and dark skin,” says Sheriff David Beth.

Sheriff Beth says an 84-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman were asleep when someone broke in through a side door. When the elderly man got out of bed to investigate, he was struck in the head.

The intruder got away despite the man’s efforts to fight him off.

His wife ended up injured as well.

But the victim had enough strength to go for help.

“He actually drove himself to Kenosha station 6, which is a little distance away, to get help  and knocked on the door,” explains Beth. “That’s how the call was initiated.”

“They are just the sweetest elderly couple you can imagine,” says Thomas Pogorzelski, the couple’s neighbor.

Neighbors says the couple has lived in the areas for more than 20 years and were shocked to hear the news.

“Very angry,” says Pogorzelski. “You don’t want it to happen anywhere but it’s bad.”

“It’s really scary,” says Laura Erbentraut, another neighbor. “You think you’re protected in your house and you’re not, especially when they prey on the elderly.”

Both victims were taken by flight for life to the hospital as a precaution. Authorities say they’re expected to be okay.

Deputies say they don’t have a motive and don’t believe anything was taken.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office.
