Suspect dies in officer-involved shooting in Manitowoc Sunday morning

MANITOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Manitowoc Police Officer was involved in a deadly shooting early Sunday morning.

In a news release, Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer said the officer was confronted around 4:40 AM Sunday by a man armed with a blunt instrument. According to the release, the confrontation escalated and the officer fired his weapon, striking the man. The suspect died at the scene.

Chief Reimer said that initially, the officer was responding, along with the Manitowoc Fire Department, to a fire alarm activated in an apartment complex in the 1500 block of S. 35th Street.  That is where the officer was confronted by the suspect

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has been contacted to investigate the incident.

In the news release, Chief Reimer emphasized that contrary to social media reports, the Sunday morning incident is not related to the double homicide in Manitowoc that happened on September 9.
