Man Injured, Dog Killed in Waukesha Co. Garage Fire

A man was injured and his dog killed during a three alarm fire in Waukesha County Sunday afternoon.

It happened on Wern Way Road just outside the Town of Genesee at a garage used to store vintage motorcycles, Wale Genesee Fire Chief Jim Moon said.

The structure is being called a complete loss, Chief Moon said.

There's no word on what started the fire but the mechanic working in the building at the time said the lights just cut out before he started smelling smoke.

Up to 18 different departments responded to this fire, Chief Moon said.

Many responding vehicles brought water to the area which does not have fire hydrants.

"When I rolled up here I was first. The fire had blown out the garage door and out the access door to the side. The renter of the building tells me that his pet was still inside, which unfortunately was still inside," Chief Moon said.

The renter - who works on vintage motorcycle as a hobby - said his dog was a sheltie.

He injured his hands - cutting them - as he tried to pry open the garage door to no avail during the fire. He declined medical treatment, Chief Moon said.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department is leading the fire investigation.
