MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Police say they have arrested three people in connection with the shooting of a 3-year-old girl that happened on Independence Day around 10:20 p.m.

The little girl was hit by a bullet shooting near 48th and Fairmount as her mom was getting her and her siblings ready for bed.

Police found six guns from the suspects and charges are expected to be filed soon.

The girl’s father Eric Smith says he’s happy an arrest has been made, but wants to see more done to stop this from happening again.

A parent’s worst nightmare is to hear that their child was shot in their own home,” said Smith.

He was at work Wednesday night when he got a call that his daughter was shot.

“I was thinking Where? How? What happened?

Smith says his wife was getting their 3-year-old daughter Symphony ready for bed when bullets came through the walls.

“She saw smoke past her head and she could smell it and hear the bullets,” said Smith.

One of those bullets hit the little girl. My wife grabs her and holds her tight and says, ‘What’s wrong baby? Are you ok?’” said Smith.

It’s something Smith could never imagine happening. “Especially my 3-year-old, or anybody’s child could be at home in the safety of their, what’s supposed to be safe, your home,” he said.

He’s happy there’s been an arrest but says that’s not enough.

“This violence has to stop, something has to happen with these weapons,” said Smith, “we have to have lawmakers, politicians working, I’m not saying they’re not, I don’t know, but something more has to be done.”

Smith says his daughter’s is healing, but he worries about her emotional scars.

“She wants to leave, she’s scared to come home, she doesn’t want to come back here cause she’s afraid,” said Smith.

Smith says the neighborhood is just too dangerous.  He has started a Go Fund Me page to try and raise money so they can move.
