Peshtigo family sends Christmas care packages to troops

PESHTIGO, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A family in northeast Wisconsin is sending care packages to U.S. troops stationed all over the world this holiday season.

Nearly 100 boxes filled with donated items such as socks, foot powder, candy, and magazines were packaged and shipped by the Drees family. The gesture helps keep the memory of 19-year-old Steven Drees of Peshtigo alive. Back in 2009, the family was getting ready to ship out care packages to his unit when they received word that Steven had been killed in a gun battle in Afghanistan.

"We sent them to his unit and from there we decided to send them to whatever area names we got," Paul Drees said. "It seemed like the right thing to do."

This is the family's ninth year of sending gifts to the troops. His dad says it helps keep Steven's memory alive.
