MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A severe case of animal abuse has a Racine man facing possible prison time and an injured puppy with a long road to recovery.

Officials at the Wisconsin Humane Society received Rocky Thursday and will take X-rays of him to figure out the extent of his injuries.

They say thousands of dollars of surgery may be needed before he can be adopted.

According to a criminal complaint, witnesses saw Terrence Howard abuse his dog in various ways last week.

"This case really breaks all of our hearts. It's just a cruel act of blatant animal abuse that should have never happened to this poor dog. He is just a puppy and his owner was just out of control, was just beating his dog, which can not be tolerated in this community.

Howard faces up to three and a half years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. The Wisconsin Humane Society runs completely on donations and is asking for donations to help. They will also have to use film for X-rays and are looking for someone with older digital X-ray machines that would be willing to donate.
