Racine man arrested after stealing a van listed on 'OfferUp' and leaving cell phone behind

A 26-year-old Racine man is facing charges after stealing a car that was posted on the popular buy, sell, and trade site 'OfferUp.'

Officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to an address in the 5900 block of 16th Street for a report of a stolen vehicle earlier this year.

According to the criminal complaint, a man explained that he worked for a local car dealership and that his employer placed a 1998 Dodge Caravan for sale on the website 'OfferUp.' A man by the name of Stephan Hansen responded to the ad and said that he would be coming from Wauwatosa to inspect the van.

According to police, Hansen arrived, test drove the van and appeared interesting in purchasing it, as well as a second vehicle that was also for sale. He offered to buy both for $1300.

The victim then entered the apartment to tell his employer about Hansen's offer. That's when Hansen fled the scene in the van. The title was never signed over and no money for the van was ever received.

According to police, Hansen left in such a hurry that he forgot his cell phone which was handed over to police.

Investigators were able to use the cell phone to identify the suspect.

Hansen now faces charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner's Consent and Theft of Moveable Property.

Hansen will have his Preliminary Hearing on June 15th.
