MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb spoke to local students at SHARP Literacy's "A Novel Event."

Off the field, Cobb works with students in Green Bay and his hometown in Tennessee, making sure they're ready for school.

He says the work Sharp Literacy does is near and dear to his heart . As a kid he says he grew up around gunshots and drug addicts and knew to get out and be a sports star, he needed to finish high school.

"As college went on and that confidence grew, I made a promise to myself I would be the first in my family to graduate college and set the bar higher for my younger sister, nephews, and nieces. really I wanted to show anyone that they're capable of graduating college too.

Cobb also took some questions from local students.

The theme "A Novel Event" showed the importance of literacy and being a lifelong learner.
