UPDATE: Teen shot inside downtown Milwaukee nightclub

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- People inside the nightclub, 'District on Water' said they were terrified. One moment they were having the time of their lives -- the next, running for it.

Milwaukee Police responded early Sunday around 1 o'clock for a shooting. They said an 18-year-old woman was shot during a fight between two men. The victim suffered a non-life threatening injury.

CBS 58 News reached out to the owner, Patsy Smith-James. She said the club has good security, and isn't sure how the gun got into the establishment.

However, some people in the area said they're not surprised. One year ago, another club-goer was shot and injured.

Some business owners in the area said the incident will likely make the nightclub examine their protocols. "No one as a business owner wants anyone to be hurt while patronizing their establishment. And I think when someone does get hurt at your establishment, it's gonna send off alerts and red lights in those owners minds to fix those small holes and gaps," said Rico Jones, owner of Trusted Kicks.

Police are also investigating the club for violations, possibly because the victim is underage.

The owner said the victim's ID was scanned and valid, according to the manager.

"All types of establishments that serve liquor and have any type of younger crowd that attend there, are gonna run into issues like this...but I wanna let you guys know we have had no issues out of them or their patrons," Jones said.

Smith-James added they are upset and saddened by the shooting. They plan to have a meeting on ways to make improvements.
