Woman Killed in Fire Allegedly Set by Family Member

Milwaukee Police are investigating a homicide that happened around 10:35 p.m. Saturday night.

35-year-old Shakira Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene on N. Palmer Street.

"Apparently it was over 20 dollars. Somebody had an argument and the brother lit the sister up," said a neighbor.

Milwaukee Police haven't confirmed that detail, but neighbors affirm the woman was lit on fire.

Although, authorities first arrived to a fire call. The fire was small enough to be put out with an extinguisher. Four people were able to get out of the home, but Hicks succumbed to the fire. Milwaukee Fire officials believe she died from the burns.

According to police, a 30-year-old family member already turned himself into police.

The normally vibrant neighborhood was a bit quieter today according to neighbors. Those that knew Hick's are trying to wrap their heads around the face she may have died at the hands of a family member.

One teenager said he knew Hicks since he was two years old.

"I knew her. We used to bring her cookies," he said. "She was real cool."

The investigation is ongoing, but police expect to present the case to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days for charges.
