Mayor Barrett calls on Chief Morales, FPC to fire officer charged with homicide

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- City leaders gathered Friday, July 3, to plea for an end to the violence gripping Milwaukee so far this year.

Mayor Tom Barrett says everyone is responsible for reducing violent crimes.

Barrett also called on city and police leaders to hold one of their own responsible.

He says MPD officer Michael Mattioli should be fired after he was charged with homicide.

"I can't think of another job where an individual who's been charged with homicide gets to stay home and get paid," Barrett said. "That's wrong, and whether it's the chief or whether it's the Fire and Police Commission, his employment with the city should be terminated."

The mayor says he's urging both the chief and the commission to fire Mattioli.

The officer is accused of putting Joel Acevedo in a chokehold while off-duty at his home in April.

Police say Mattioli's firing is up to the commission.
