Milwaukee celebrates World Refugee Day

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – People in Milwaukee gathered at Ziedler Park to celebrate World Refugee Day.

The day recognizes the courage of millions of refugees who have had to flee their homes.

The International Institute of Wisconsin says despite most refugees coming to the U.S. alone, they are really looking at how they can become part of our community.

“The main thing is to recognize them, honor their courage, resilience and make sure that we understand who they are as they become our neighbors here in Milwaukee and Wisconsin,” said Alexander Durtka, president of the International Institute of Wisconsin.

A U.N. report says wars, persecution, and other violence have driven nearly 69 million people from their home.
