Milwaukee County Sheriff\'s Office/family of Jaylen Sloan

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Charges have been filed against the man accused in a crash that killed one of his twin sons and seriously injured the other.

Christopher Sloan is charged with the following:

  • Second degree reckless homicide
  • Second degree recklessly endangering safety
  • Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle
  • Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration
  • Knowingly operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, causing death
  • Neglecting a child -- consequence is death

Officers responded to the scene at 81st and Hampton shortly after 8 p.m. Oct. 25.

According to a criminal complaint, Sloan, identified as the driver of the crashed vehicle, was attempting to attack fire department personnel and making statements that did not correlate with what was happening. Two other vehicles, that appeared to have been parked on the street, had been struck, and a Ford Expedition was resting in a front yard.

The complaint says Sloan was instructed to ride in the medical unit, where he was "continuously trying to fight" and slurring his speech. When asked who the kids in the Expedition were, the complaint says Sloan responded, "who?" and at one point tried to kick a firefighter and strike nurses trying to provide medical attention at the hospital.

MFD transported 5-year-olds twins Jaylen and Jaylon Sloan to Children's Wisconsin, where Jaylen died of his injuries.

Investigators spoke with a witness who reported seeing the Ford Expedition traveling in front of her prior to the crash. The complaint says the witness saw Sloan swinging his leg and arm out the door of the vehicle before speeding off. Another witness recalled seeing the Expedition traveling recklessly at a high rate of speed, weaving back and forth between lanes with the driver's door open, as the driver laughed and played loud music.

When questioned by authorities the following day, Sloan claimed to not remember the crash or the circumstances leading up to it. He said he'd picked up his two children from school that day and admitted to drinking alcohol before the crash.

The complaint says Sloan has never been issued a valid driver's license.

Cash bond has been set at $200,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 8.
