WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police investigated vandalism at Craig Counsell Park in Whitefish Bay Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The vandalism came after longtime Brewers coach Craig Counsell announced he's leaving the team to manage the Brewers' biggest rival, the Chicago Cubs.

People in the community said the vandalism shocked them, but it didn’t surprise them given Counsell's next career move.

"I understand people are passionate and emotions are really high, but there is never a reason to do something like this," said Josh Quinn, a Chicago native, who has called Milwaukee County home for nearly two decades.

"To find out some yahoo went out there with whatever they had, to deface a sign, it’s just not worth it, there's no reason for it," said Quinn.

Quinn went on to say Counsell's park serves as a place of inspiration, and to find out it was vandalized was disappointing.

"It's something that’s supposed to lift the community up and encourage kids to be more active," said Quinn.

According to police, the sign was defaced with an explicit word written across it, was reported to them just after 5 a.m. Tuesday. CBS 58 crews saw the graffiti just after 2 a.m.

Counsell and his family have deep ties to the Whitefish Bay community.

He went to Whitefish Bay High School and played on the Little League park grounds.

Baseball fans like Quinn said the Brewers fan confusion was to be expected.

"When you have someone that is beloved, that's done great things for your team and the city, to leave and go to your rival -- even as a Chicago fan, I can understand how angry that is," said Quinn.

Police told CBS 58 News no arrests have been made.

The park was dedicated to Counsell back in 2012.
