MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Community members received free screenings for hair, skin, and nails health at Gee’s Clippers on Saturday, Feb. 17.
The clinic was hosted by Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin.
Officials say these screening are important because people of color are at a higher risk of dying from skin cancer.
“Women of color in particular may have trouble finding a provider that's familiar with their hair texture or styling practice or skin tone,” said Dr. Shola Vaughn, Assistant Professor of Dermatology.
This is the third year this clinic has been hosted. Dr. Vaughn said she’s looking forward to it continuing.
“The reason I'm really excited about it is because for communities of color, those are areas...especially hair and nails that don't usually get addressed as part of their usually primary care,” she said.
There are barriers to access of care, knowledge and financial challenges.
The pop-up clinic was a chance for community members to get questions answered.
“We'll be particularly addressing conditions that affect communities of color like hair loss or alopecia, things like melanoma of the fingernails and other things that might have been missed,” said Dr. Vaughn.
