Brewers trading Corbin Burnes to Baltimore Orioles

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For the second time in three seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers are moving on from an All-Star.

The Brewers announced on Thursday, Feb. 1 they are sending Cy Young winner and All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles.

"Corbin was a tremendous part of our recent seasons of success, and we appreciate all he contributed to the organization over the years. We wish him and his family the very best going forward," said Brewers Senior Vice President and General manager Matt Arnold in a team release.

In return, Brewers are getting back two prospect players in infielder Joey Ortiz and left-handed pitcher DL Hall, as well as the 34th pick in the 2024 draft.

“The Brewers are receiving two talented young Major League-ready players along with a valuable 2024 draft pick. We expect both DL and Joey to have an impact on our 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to add them both to the Brewers family," Arnold added.

Burnes is a three-time All-Star and won the Cy Young in 2021 with a league leading 2.43 ERA.

He has thrown 200 strikeouts in three straight seasons including leading the National League with 243 in 2022.

The 29-year old has spent all six of his years in the majors with the Brewers going 45-27. Burnes is in his final year under Brewers control and was set to make just over $15 million.

Ortiz made his major league debut in 2023 for the Orioles playing 15 games. Hall is a former first round pick in 2017 for Baltimore. He made 29 appearances in the majors over two seasons with one start.

To make room on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Ethan Small has been designated for assignment.
