Don't Isolate if You're Feeling Blue This Holiday Season
Dr. Peggy Scallon with Rogers Memorial Hospital is getting the word out on how to reverse the holiday blues that come on for many this time of year.
She told the CBS 58 News at 4 that you can actually turn your mood around by staying active in the community.
It's something called behavioral activation.
"If you stay home, you tend to spiral down. Do the opposite," Dr. Scallon urged viewers. "Get out there with people. Generate support. The mood follows.
Exercise is huge.
"Exercise has been shown to be as effective as antidepressants."
The doctor also urging folks to make sure they get a good night's sleep and keeping hold of the importance of the simple traditions that bring closeness among family and friends.
"We think our house should look like Pinterest. We worry about burning the turkey or if my gifts are flop."
In her work in child psychology, the doctor says that is far less important to children.
"Kids just want to see you smile. So kids really don't care about the gifts or the house. They want to have the attention and feel the love of their family. Remember that holidays are a time to connect rather than be frantic."
If you must keep busy, volunteering is a great way to bring about positive thoughts.
