WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Late in the game, when everyone is exhausted, sometimes you just need a little push.
That's when Lamar Smith looks to his parents.
"When I'm on the bench, I'll look across, or I'll hear them in the back of my ear and say 'go Lamar' or whatever. So, it's always an energy boost," said Lamar Smith, Carroll sophomore.
Lamar is one of two Milwaukee natives on the Carroll University men's basketball team.
"Growing up I always had thought you go to college somewhere far, far away from where you grew up. But as I got older, I realized that, really, wasn't as much important as where I felt comfortable and it's been awesome to be able to go here, I'm still close to home," said Justin Steinike, Carroll senior.
Steinike's parents and grandparents haven't missed a game since the pandemic. Smith's parents and his girlfriend are mainstays in the stands too.
"It's honestly everything. Before the game I'll go hug my mom or say something to my dad when he walks in. So, it's a little extra motivation," said Smith.
"For me, it's always nice like having them there after the game to see my mom, my dad, my grandparents. After a tough loss them being there to support me. Or celebrate after a big win," Steinike.
With that home cooking, the Pioneers have started the season 5-1 on pace for their most wins since at least 2016.
