MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Friday, April 26, is National Pretzel Day. Milwaukee Pretzel Company is preparing to make thousands of traditional German pretzels for the big day. The company is owned by two Marquette grads who spent a year living in Germany. Katie and Matt Wessel instantly noticed a lot of similarities between Milwaukee and Munich, but there was one thing missing.

"You know, the beer, the sausage, the cheese, those parallels we were familiar with, but the pretzels were different, and they were so good. Unlike anything we’d ever had back here," said Wessel.

In 2013, they moved back home to Milwaukee and decided they would bring the traditional pretzels back home.

"Our goal was really to bring the experience of having an amazing pretzel in Germany to our friends and family back here in Milwaukee," said Wessel.

Over the last 10 years they've mastered the twist. There are still dozens of artisanal hand rollers in the bakery making between 50 to 70,000 Bavarian pretzels every day. And that number goes up during beer garden season and Oktoberfest.
