Woman killed in hit-and-run crash near 23rd and Greenfield; neighbors plead for safety measures
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 27-year-old woman is dead after being struck in a hit-and-run crash near 23rd and Greenfield on Saturday, July 15. She was identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office as Storm Maria Rumpf.
Police said around 10:20 p.m., the woman was hit by two cars -- the first car travelling east on Greenfield struck the woman and did not stop. A second car, which was following the first car, also hit the woman but stopped and remained on the scene.
The first car that hit Rumpf is said to be a gray/silver Jeep Grand Cherokee (likely 1999-2004), fled the scene. The police department is asking the public for help to identify the driver. They say the car should have damage to the passenger side headlight area and hood or windshield.
The driver of the second car, a 52-year-old man from Plymouth, was taken into custody.
People like Omar Bravo, who works at Christ St. Peter Lutheran Church said this accident, although tragic, came as no surprise.
"We see people driving very fast here," said Bravo.
Bravo said the issue has gotten so bad he's even contacted his local Alderman JoCasta Zamarripa for help.
"I think we requested for a stop light but I guess that costs a lot of money but I think a human life is more important," said Bravo.
We've contacted Zamarripa's office for comment but have not heard back in regard to reaction not neighborhood safety concerns.
This investigation is ongoing. Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
