MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners to watch out for unsolicited contractors offering discounted driveway or sidewalk paving, a common scam that can cost thousands of dollars.
Lisa Schiller, senior director of investigations and media relations for the BBB, joined us on Monday, April 6 to chat about the warning signs and how to protect yourself.
The scam typically starts with a contractor claiming they have leftover materials from a nearby job. After collecting a large upfront payment, the contractor either disappears or delivers shoddy work, according to the BBB.
The BBB recommends researching contractors at BBB.org before hiring, getting estimates in writing, staggering payments and paying by credit card rather than cash.
