Complaint: Man charged in death of 17-year-old was 'playing' with gun

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man is now charged for allegedly shooting and killing 17-year-old Levaughn Morris.

The shooting happened around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, near 28th and Concordia.

Jovon Young-Smith, 18, is charged with second degree reckless homicide.

According to a criminal complaint, Young-Smith told investigators that he, the victim, and a third friend were all together at the home where the shooting occurred.

Prosecutors say he told officers the victim was in the bedroom "playing with a firearm," when Young-Smith walked in and asked for it. He reportedly stated that he started to "play" with the gun, pointing it directly at Levaughn Morris and pulling the trigger.

The complaint says Young-Smith told police he didn't know the gun was loaded and didn't check before pulling the trigger.

Prosecutors say Young-Smith and his friend initially told police that unknown individuals entered the home and shot Levaughn.

Court records show cash bond has been set at $25,000.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 13.
