MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers has approved a $4.5 million project to upgrade lighting systems in four tunnels in Milwaukee County.
According to a Tuesday, Feb. 11 press release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, MP Systems is the primary contractor for the project, which is scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 17.
The project includes lighting improvements in the northbound I-43 exit ramp tunnel to W. Kilbourn, the northbound I-43 entrance ramp tunnel from W. Kilbourn, and both northbound and southbound WIS 38 (S. Howell Avenue) tunnels under the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport runway.
The work is scheduled to be completed in multiple stages:
- The first stage includes upgrades to the northbound I-43 exit ramp tunnel to W. Kilbourn with a detour directing traffic to Exit 73A at Fond du Lac (WIS 145) and 6th Street.
- The second stage focuses on the northbound I-43 entrance ramp tunnel from W. Kilbourn, with a detour using 6th and Fond du Lac.
- The third stage will upgrade the WIS 38 tunnels under the airport runway.
WIS 38 will remain open during construction with lane closures, and access to local businesses and residences will be maintained. The third stage will upgrade the WIS 38 tunnels under the airport runway.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-summer. WisDOT says that the work is weather dependent and subject to change.
