MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A man is now charged in a shooting that sent three Milwaukee police officers to the hospital.

Keith Jeter, 35, is charged with the following:

  • Attempted first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon (four counts)
  • First-degree recklessly endangering safety, use of a dangerous weapon (two counts)
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon (two counts)
  • Bail jumping

The incident happened at an apartment building near 91st and Custer on Sept. 5. Officers were in the area searching for Jeter, who was wanted for felony possession of a firearm, domestic-violence-related false imprisonment, and sexual assault.

Officers tried to communicate with Jeter for more than an hour to get him to surrender, but he did not.

According to a criminal complaint, at one point Jeter said, "If I come out will you just kill me?"

Authorities say Jeter shot at officers and they shot back.

The complaint says one officer used a ballistic shield to protect himself from being shot. One bullet penetrated the outer part of the shield and was extricated from inside.

A total of 254 bullet holes and strikes were located by investigators at the scene.

The officers suffered graze wounds.

Jeter was also injured.

Jeter was in court on Wednesday, Sept. 11. His bond was set at one million dollars.
