Milwaukee man charged with attempted homicide, accused of shooting at officers during chase
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man faces several charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, after officials say he was involved a high-speed chase with police officers.
Twenty-one-year-old Kentreal Evans allegedly shot at officers while fleeing in a stolen vehicle on March 27 according to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
The complaint alleges that Evans stole a Volkswagen Tiguan from a driveway after the owner left the key fob in the center console. The vehicle contained a 9mm semi-automatic firearm at the time of the theft. Later that day, Milwaukee police officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, initiating a high-speed chase.
Evans is accused of shooting at the officers during the pursuit, which reached speeds of approximately 100 mph.
The chase continued for more than five miles, with Evans allegedly weaving in and out of traffic, disregarding traffic signals and nearly striking several vehicles.
The pursuit finally ended when the stolen vehicle crashed into a snowbank at the intersection of 34th and Capitol.
Following the arrest, officers recovered the stolen firearm and other personal items belonging to the vehicle's owner.
Evans is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon, driving or operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, fleeing or eluding an officer and second-degree recklessly endangering safety.
If convicted, Evans could face up to 60 years in prison for each count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
The additional charges carry maximum sentences of 12 years and six months for discharging a firearm from a vehicle, ten years for possession of a firearm by a felon, ten years for second-degree recklessly endangering safety, three years and six months for driving or operating a vehicle without the owner's consent and three years and six months for fleeing or eluding an officer.
A $500,000 cash bond was set for Evans on Saturday, April 1. His next court appearance, a preliminary hearing, is scheduled for Monday, April 10.
