A day in the outdoors: Young students learn about nature at nonprofit expo

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If you've ever wondered that kids are spending too much time staring at screens and not enough time outside, you should have been at Milwaukee's Havenwoods State Forest.

On Tuesday, May 8, hundreds of kids got what amounted to a tour, guided by experts of the joy nature has to offer.

It was the Midwest Outdoor Heritage Education Expo, a fancy title for having fun outside!

Fourth through 7th grade students spent their day under the sun trying outdoor sports like fishing and archery, learning about fire safety, learning about animals, and doing just about anything a kid could imagine on a beautiful spring day in an urban park.

Their instructors made it a point to encourage them to look, to try and to touch.

"We let the kids touch, it's a sensory safari," said Ruth Ann Lee, executive director of the Outdoor Heritage Education Center. "We want them to explore, we want them to compare...the fur of an otter compared to the fur of a coyote and what are some of those differences."

The expo was staged by the Outdoor Heritage Education Center, a nonprofit group dedicated to getting kids and adults outside.
