Active road construction projects on hold through the Memorial Day weekend
The roads of southeastern WI will be heavy with traffic for the Memorial Day weekend; this corresponding with the busiest travel times for the long weekend on both Friday and Monday.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said most highway construction projects will be put on hold starting at noon today and won’t resume until early Tuesday morning.
Even with construction on hold, drivers should still be mindful of slower traffic and backups in construction/work zones.
In southeastern WI there will be several long-term closures that will remain in place even with construction suspended drivers will need to be aware of those closures that could impact their travels. These include:
- The Michigan St. Bridge over the Milwaukee River, over the course of the next year, will undergo extensive repairs and rehabilitation work. Drivers will have several detours available to them; eastbound traffic will use Wisconsin Ave. via Plankinton Ave., while westbound traffic will be detoured along Clybourn St.
- The I-43 northbound exit ramp to Capital Drive will remain closed for reconstruction. Drivers should use either Keefe/Atkinson Ave. or Hampton Ave. as detours.
- The Kilbourn Ave. Tunnel on ramp to I-43 northbound remains closed for repairs until June in Milwaukee. Drivers should use the Fond du Lac/McKinley Ave. ramps to access the I-43 northbound corridor.
- The I-94/41 corridor in Racine and Kenosha counties will have several ramps that will also remain closed long-term as part of the North-South Freeway Project.
