MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --The 17th annual MPS Run Back to School 5K Run/Walk returned Saturday, Aug. 24.
More than 1,200 participants signed up for the event which benefits youth sports, recreation, and wellness programs at MPS.
The event is hosted by Milwaukee Publics Schools and Milwaukee Recreation. "Any way we can keep young people active is going to contribute to a more positive learning environment," said Lynn Greb, Director of Recreation at Milwaukee Recreation.
Each school that gets at least 25 individuals to register for their team qualifies for a $500 mini grant that can be used in their school for wellness programs, sports teams, and equipment. "We're really excited that it can go right back to the students," said Greb.
Joel Symons is the recreation supervisor at Milwaukee Recreation and says he's seen this event grow over the last 17 years.
"I would say it's just been awesome since the beginning," he said.
Officials with Milwaukee Recreation say they hope the energy of the event carries throughout the school year, as supporting physical activity and wellness enhances the academic experience for kids.
"Kids need things to do - sports, any kind of classes, enrichment classes and not just the physical part but the mental aspect," said Symons.
