City of Waukesha offering $200 rebate to sewer users who remove their water softeners

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The City of Waukesha is offering a $200 rebate to sewer users who remove and dispose of their water softeners.

It's part of an initiative to reduce chloride levels. The city says chloride is primarily introduced through water softener salt that enters the sewer system and ultimately reaches their Clean Water Treatment Plant.

Standard water treatment processes cannot remove chloride, so attempts to reduce it at the source are critical.

In October of 2023, Waukesha switched its drinking water source to Lake Michigan water, which is 60% softer than the previous groundwater supply. The city says if you remove your water softener, you'll eliminate the handling and cost of salt and save money by not having to pay for the water used when the softener regenerates.

Those who remove their water softeners must submit an application to receive the rebate. Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.

To be eligible, applications must be received or postmarked by June 30, 2025.

After having your softener disconnected from the plumbing, the softener can be disposed of by a Waste Management pickup at your home, or it can be taken to the city's drop-off center.
