Hamilton High School student killed after striking tree in Menomonee Falls

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened in Menomonee Falls Tuesday, April 1.

Officials say the sole vehicle involved left the roadway and struck a tree around 3:35 p.m.

Police say the vehicle had been traveling northbound on Lannon Road and was located on fire, immediately east of the roadway, about a fourth mile north of Lisbon Road.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and located the driver deceased.

He was identified by Hamilton High School Wednesday as junior Owen Briggs.

Friends of Briggs remember him as a bright light and a funny guy who was loved by everyone he knew.

"When I heard like he’s gone, I couldn’t believe that was him,” said Victoria Torres, a friend of Briggs. “He deserves every last bit of everything like it does not surprise me. Because he was so well known and there was so much respect given to this guy."

Now, a memorial grows for Briggs at the site of the crash, with flowers, balloons, and footballs surrounding the tree Briggs’ vehicle crashed into. Balloons spell out the number 57, which Torres says was Briggs’ jersey number.

In a statement, the Hamilton School District said:

“We are deeply saddened by this loss to our school community. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Briggs family during this incredibly difficult time. Hamilton School District Student Services team members are supporting students and staff today and will continue to be available as needed.”

Police say speed appears to have been a factor in the crash; however, the cause remains under investigation.
