Haggerty Museum of Art to open Bill Tennessen photography exhibit
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- "Dynamic Range: Photographs by Bill Tennessen" is an upcoming exhibition that will be unveiled at the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University, featuring the evocative work of the Milwaukee native and self-taught photographer.
The exhibition, which chronicles key cultural and community events in Milwaukee's history, is set to open its doors to the public from Jan. 19 through May 12, 2024.
Tennessen, who started his photographic journey in 1981 contributing to the Milwaukee Community Journal, is known for his extensive coverage of significant local events, including the Ernest Lacy demonstrations and Juneteenth Day celebrations.
A Thursday, Nov. 2 press release detailed his career, which highlights Milwaukee's African American community and captures the city's dynamic storefront churches and public figures.
His work also extended to sports, having photographed the Milwaukee Bucks and Marquette University basketball among other events.
The exhibition is a collaborative effort with insights from Dr. Robert Smith and Mia Phifer, reflecting on Tennessen's portrayal of Milwaukee's African American history and the role of the Milwaukee Community Journal in documenting it.
