Kaukauna Police: 12-year-old boy dies after trying to release turtle into pond
KAUKAUNA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 12-year-old boy has died after he and his three brothers went to a retention pond to release a turtle.
Kaukauna Police say around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, they were sent to Lamplighter Drive. When rescue personnel arrived, several people were looking into a pond on the grounds of Lamplighter Apartments searching for a boy.
Police say four brothers, ages 7, 11, 11, and 12 went to the retention pond to release a turtle. At one point, at least three of the boys were in the pond. One of the boys was on the bank of the pond and saw two of his brothers struggling. The brother began to yell for help and a mother and a daughter who lived at Lamplighter Apartments came to help. One of the women jumped into the pond and pulled out the two boys who they could see were struggling. The third brother, the 12-year-old, was not initially seen in the pond and when rescuers arrived, began to search the pond for the missing boy.
The child was found and immediately taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Kaukauna Police believe the boy was in the pond for about an hour and a half to two hours before he was recovered.
The case is still under investigation.
