MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 76-year-old Milwaukee woman is reportedly dead after being struck by a vehicle while walking through a crash site on I-43 near North Avenue, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials said the woman exited a separate vehicle and was walking near the scene of an earlier two-vehicle crash when she was hit. The crash occurred after a car and a pickup truck towing a trailer collided at around 4 a.m. on Thursday, April 10.

The woman, believed to be a relative of someone involved in the initial crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was identified as 76-year-old Bobbie Wade. 

A 25-year-old Milwaukee man driving the striking vehicle was taken into custody on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.

Supervisor Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones offered her condolences in the following statement: 

“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by those who act selflessly in moments of crisis. Ms. Wade stepped forward to help others in a time of need, embodying the compassion and courage we all hope to see in our community. Her loss is heartbreaking and should never have happened. I extend my deepest thoughts, prayers, and condolences to her family, friends, and all who are mourning her today.

“We must continue to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of impaired and reckless driving. Every life lost due to these preventable choices is one too many. I urge all drivers to remain alert, responsible, and vigilant behind the wheel—for your safety and the safety of every person on our roads.”

The investigation is ongoing.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A death investigation is underway following a crash that closed all northbound lanes of I-43 at the North Avenue on-ramp in Milwaukee early Thursday, April 10.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to CBS 58 that they responded to the scene where a crash took place at 4:22 a.m.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reported all northbound lanes were blocked for around two hours. Drivers were advised to exit and re-enter I-43 at North Avenue. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
