MFD advises caution while driving in winter weather, other safety tips

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Fire Department is working to keep people safe as the winter storm rages on.

They are ready to step up and help during emergencies, but they hope it doesn't come to that.

"If you don't have to go out today, please stay home. If you have to go out, there are a couple things you can do. Either leave earlier so you can get there on time or get there late. But get there, and get there safe," said a member of the MFD.

Some other advice from MFD: Stay in your car and wait for help if you swerve off the road or get into an accident.

Be careful heating your home. Absolutely do not use an oven or stove to bump up the temperature. If you are running a space heater, read the safety manual. Check the furnace to make sure the pilot light flame is burning blue, and the light is flashing green.

Chances are you have heard this advice before, but simple reminders could save lives.
