MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A suspect is in the hospital after he was shot in Milwaukee Monday morning by members of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
The incident happened on the sidewalk outside a transitional living facility near 28th and Wells around 9:30 a.m. Many of the residents say even though they are used to hearing gunfire in the area, this one hit too close to home.
"There was a lot of screaming and yelling and then all a sudden, a whole bunch of gunshots," a witness, Nikki, said.
"I heard the cops scream to not move and put it down," another witness, Nancy, said.
A U.S. Marshals team was in the area conducting surveillance for a fugitive investigation when an unrelated shooting happened nearby. Members of the U.S. Marshals then shot at the shooting suspect.
"They had the suspect on the ground, I saw blood and they ended up tying his leg up because he must have got shot in the leg," Nancy said.
"At some point during the incident, a gas meter was struck. There was a gentleman laying down on the ground and the next thing I knew we were getting evacuated from a gas leak from what I'm assuming was a bullet hitting the gas line, said another witness, Heidi.
The residents were evacuated to a nearby apartment's community room.
"It's pretty crazy. I mean gunshots are kind of prevalent in this area, however, you don't exactly expect it to be happening under your window," Heidi said.
The U.S. Marshals Service says no law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident. Milwaukee Police are also investigating. The U.S. Marshals Service says they will not release the names of the deputy marshals involved in the shooting until all investigations surrounding the incident are complete.
