MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The first MPS game of the season was supposed to take place at Vincent Field Thursday night, Aug. 19. This time the problem isn't Covid, but having players' documents on file.
Late Wednesday night, Milwaukee-Marshall players learned their season opener was canceled.
"I wanted to play this game," said Marshall High School junior Joshua Jordan. "This is my first year playing since 8th grade and I can't play."
Racine Horlick Athletic Director Joe Wendt says he found out the game was off in an email after 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
"That letter just explained that they would not have enough players to compete against us this evening due to a variety of reasons, listed as up-to-date physicals, appropriate insurance and other etc., etc. needs to be qualified to play."
The WIAA says they did not cancel the games, so the decision was made at the local level.
Players were under the impression their forms were submitted correctly until Wednesday.
"We didn't play last year," said Marshall High School senior Montrell. "We didn't play in the spring, so we wanted to play this year. I wanted to play them, especially."
MPS says forms were not lost, but the new online registration system has proven challenging for parents.
"We're working with our parents to support them in that process," said MPS Regional Superintendent Jennifer Smith. "We'll be continuing offering opportunities for students to get a physical. We'll be helping parents with completing the online registration."
Racine-Horlick is trying to reschedule their game with another team this weekend.
