NASA Super Guppy, B-25 Warbirds among thousands of planes in Oshkosh for 2023 EAA Airventure
OSHKOSH, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Aircraft and aviation enthusiasts from around the world come to Oshkosh every year for the EAA Airventure.
The show starts on Monday, July 24, and runs through Sunday, July 30. CBS 58 was there as the grounds opened at 7 a.m. on Monday.
This week, Wittman airport in Oshkosh is the busiest airport in the world. It will welcome 10,000 planes and more than 700,000 people in six days.
It's a celebration of all the advances and new technology in the aviation world.
"It will be the first airplane in aviation history ever built that can be flown simply with your feet," said Jessica Cox, a pilot who uses her feet to fly planes.
You'll see a new plane landing every couple of minutes, and everywhere you turn there are helicopters, military, passenger and cargo planes.
Right at 7 a.m., crowds gathered around NASA's Super Guppy cargo plane to watch pilots open the nose.
"Last November, when we shot from Kennedy Space Center, we sent a capsule all the way around the moon. It was a great mission. This vehicle right here carries parts for that, and as they open it up, you'll see how big it is," said Dr. John Blevins, the SLS chief engineer with NASA.
Some people come to see the latest in aviation, and others come to honor the history of planes like the Warbirds.
"If we had not entered World War II, then this would very likely be a different world that we live in right now," said Tom Ewing, a B-25 pilot with the EAA. "It was because of all of these Warbirds. The B-25s, the B17s, all of them."
Tickets are still available for the 2023 EAA Airventure. You can get up close to planes big and small and talk to pilots who are excited to show their aircraft.
