Memorial grows for fallen Officer Corder outside Milwaukee Police District 2
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As law enforcement across Milwaukee and the nation mourn Officer Kendall Corder, so does our community.
A memorial is growing at Milwaukee Police District 2 with dozens of flowers, stuffed animals and multiple thin blue line police flags being draped across Officer Corder's squad car.
As of Monday, June 30, he rests at the Medical Examiner's office where he is accompanied by a 24-hour police presence.
Dozens of Milwaukee’s are taking time out of their day to think Officer Corder for his service.
While many people say they didn’t know Officer Corder, they still wanted to pay their respects outside of Milwaukee Police District 2.
“Just sad. It shouldn’t have happened,” said Kaylynn Rendall, who came to pay her respects. “Praying for them is just what felt right.”
In times of tragedy, a community finds strength in faith and each other.
“There’s a lot of strong people here, and we all hope for the best. We really do,” said Gina Plockleman, who lives in District 2.
The MPD squad parked outside reminds this community of their loss.
“People do care. Especially in a world where it sometimes feels like people don’t,” said Rendall.
On Sunday, Officer Corder died from his injuries, following a shooting last Thursday.
“He was a person, and he had a family, he had a life, he had a job, he had friends,” said Rendall.
His legacy touched even the youngest of lives.
“I asked my mom if I could make a card and put it by the police car,” said 9-year-old Ayden Segundo.
To Segundo, Officer Corder represented a safer Milwaukee.
“Thank you for protecting my city and making the city a better place for me to grow up in,” Segundo wrote.
It’s a city that now honors Officer Corder’s ultimate sacrifice.
“Thank you for your service,” said Segundo.
All morning, people have been coming by taking pictures, paying their respects, and sounding their horns as they drive by.
The executive director of the Friendship Circle dropped off coffee and pastries for the officers inside District 2.
A number of people tell CBS 58 this is a major loss for the community, and how devastating it is to lose a great cop.
Zach Anderson is currently in school to become a police officer. He came by to drape another thin blue line flag on the front of the squad car. He says this hit really close to home.
"I was devastated with the news, hoping he was going to pull through, but unfortunately, he passed away. It's just devastating for the community, and I hope the community can support his family at this time and support the MPD at the time. They go in day and day out and protect the community, and this could happen to anyone but it's so sad," said Anderson, as he stopped by District 2 to pay his respects.
CBS 58 is hoping to learn more about the funeral arrangements in the coming days.
