Race for Wisconsin superintendent heats up

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Ahead of the 2021 spring election on Tuesday, April 6, the race for Wisconsin superintendent of schools is heating up.

Pecatonica Superintendent Jill Underly and former Brown Deer Superintendent Deb Kerr meet April 6. Underly is calling Kerr transphobic. Kerr supports prohibiting transgender students from playing on girls' teams because she believes it's not fair.

Underly says "trans kids are kids... plain and simple."

"I want to play against other biological women and girls, I don't think it's fair to have competition that does otherwise," said Kerr.

"Trans kids are kids, that's plain and simple. They deserve to feel safe and welcome in their schools," Underly asid.

The winner of the election will serve a four-year term as secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the state's top education official.
