Wisconsin DOJ confirms 2 police officers killed in the line of duty in Barron County

VILLAGE OF CAMERON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Two police officers were killed, and one suspect died after an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop in the Village of Cameron on Saturday, April 8, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3:38 p.m. when an officer from the Chetek Police Department conducted the traffic stop. Both a Chetek Police Officer and a Cameron Police Officer were pronounced dead at the scene. The involved individual was transported to a hospital, where they later died.

Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Wisconsin DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Barron County Sheriff's Office, Rusk County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Lab and a DCI Crime Response Specialist.

All involved law enforcement agencies are reportedly fully cooperating with the DCI during this investigation.

BARRON COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Two Northwest Wisconsin officers have reportedly died in the line of duty, according to reports on social media from the Milwaukee Fire Honor Guard. Other agencies have posted to social media to express their condolences and support.


The Barron's County Sheriff's Department says they are investigating a critical incident near Cameron, and that the public is not in danger.
