Salvation Army, Brewers team up to prepare meals for kids this summer

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- From Fiserv Forum to American Family Field, the Salvation Army and the Milwaukee Brewers teamed up for the annual Feed the Kids kickoff.

Volunteers and Brewers staff prepared 600 sack lunches for children living in Milwaukee's underserved neighborhoods.

The Salvation Army tells us this is an important program to prevent kids from going hungry while school is out for the summer.

"Many kids get lunches or breakfast at school during the year but during the summer that's not available. And this gives us an opportunity to let those young people get a meal during the day," said Salvation Army Milwaukee Area Commander Major Beverly Gates.

After today, volunteers will prepare about 1,000 lunches, Monday through Friday, for the next nine weeks going out to kids in 20 neighborhoods on the north and south sides.

The program has provided nearly three million meals to kids in Milwaukee County since 1990.
