Shorewood School District enacts new policy for transgender students

SHOREWOOD -- The Shorewood School District became the first Milwaukee County district to pass a set of rules providing facilities and recognition for students who identify as transgender.

Shorewood High School Principal Tim Kenney spearheaded the new set of rules for the district. He says he started pushing for an official district policy, because he knew it would be an issue at some point.

According to the district, a student's parent must write a letter saying their child identifies as transgender. The district's new policy will allow transgender students to use a unisex bathroom or the bathroom of their self-identified gender. We're told all four of the district's public schools have unisex bathrooms.

The district will also allow students to use locker rooms of the gender they identify with. Students who identify as transgender can also use the gender-neutral coaches locker room.
