Sussex man charged with possession of improvised explosives after severely injuring own hand
SUSSEX, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 33-year-old Sussex man, Kody L. Kirkland, is currently facing charges for possession of improvised explosives following an incident in which he sustained serious injuries to his hand in an explosion involving materials believed to be used for making explosive devices.
According to a criminal complaint released by the Waukesha County Circuit Court, an incident reportedly occurred at his Waukesha Ave. residence on Sunday, Nov. 5 when a witness claims to have seen Kirkland "using some sort of flammable substance" before hearing a "very loud explosion and Kody on the ground screaming." Kirkland was then transported to Froedtert Hospital for serious injuries to his right hand, requiring immediate surgery.
During their investigation, authorities say they discovered various components and materials indicative of improvised explosive device manufacturing. Among the items officials report finding are ammonium nitrate or potassium nitrate, flash powder, sulfur, Loctite, aluminum foil, wax paper and remnants of commercial fireworks.
The criminal complaint notes that the materials were found scattered in Kirkland's backyard and inside his residence.
Further exploration by the Milwaukee Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit reportedly revealed additional evidence in Kirkland's bedroom and vehicle, including 3D printed firearm parts, powdered carbon, potassium nitrate, charcoal, a rock tumbler with black residue and other elements consistent with IED manufacture.
Officials say that a detailed search also uncovered Tannerite, stump remover primarily composed of potassium nitrate, and potential fusing mechanisms.
Kirkland faces a Class H felony charge for possession of improvised explosives. If convicted, he could face a fine up to $10,000, imprisonment for up to six years, or both.
