Volunteers begin clearing way for new foot path on Ice Age National Scenic Trail

DANE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Volunteers are clearing the way for a new section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Wisconsin.

The four-and-a-half-day project will create three miles of new foot path.

It requires a lot of hands to move the dirt, but volunteers say it will be all worth it once it's complete.

Officials say the project shows just how important it is to bring people closer to nature.

"We are within a metropolitan area of 800,000 people that are withing a half an hour drive have access to this. So there's a green space in place for people to recreate and we're adding more trail to that," said Eric Gabriel, National Park Service.

The trail building is underway now through Sunday.

Group leaders say they have enough volunteers who have stepped up to help this year.
