Waukesha to create world’s largest glass gherkin at Oktoberfest 🥒
WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In a “dilly” of a community effort, Waukesha is embarking on a journey to create a giant glass German gherkin just in time for the city's Oktoberfest celebration.
The City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and Mack Glass are teaming up to construct the pickle, a symbol rooted in German tradition, for Waukesha's Oktoberfest.
Joanna Adamicki with the City of Waukesha explained the reason behind the project in a press release, saying, "The tradition of unique hand-blown glass ornaments in Germany is long and storied."
She added, “We will have our very own glass blowers on site using the glass the public brings to create the world’s largest glass pickle.”
Residents can contribute clean green, clear and brown glass at Neighborhood Beer Gardens at Rivers Crossing Park through Saturday, Aug. 26. The collection will continue at Merrill Crest Park from Thursday, Sept. 7 through Saturday, Sept. 9.
During Oktoberfest on Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23, the glass will be melted and shaped into a gigantic German gherkin at Frame Park, showcasing a community-wide effort to reduce, reuse and recycle.
