MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The former Northridge Mall site has been an eyesore for more than two decades since it closed in 2003. Wednesday, city leaders provided an update on the massive redevelopment project while asking the community what they want to see.
"Sports recreation, along with maybe some housing," said Bilal Ahmad, a Milwaukee resident.
With 58 acres worth of possibilities, Milwaukee residents are voicing their opinions about what they want to see the city build at the old Northridge Mall site.
"I would love to see residential and retail, and vibrant entertainment within this area to uplift this area," said Travis Clark, Milwaukee resident.
City leaders held a community meeting on Wednesday. They say demolition is expected to be finished by the end of the year and in that time, they also hope to have a final redevelopment proposal.
"Part of our planning right now is what does that market say about what is most appropriate here, what's most likely to be viable here, and we want the community, as I noted, to be a part of that," said Lafayette Crump, City of Milwaukee commissioner of city development.
Some ideas in the running for the space include new housing, a business park, entertainment and recreational use, retail space and more.
"I think that there is so much potential for what could be here," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. "It could be larger business, it could be something that's mixed use, really the possibilities are endless. It's a blank canvas and a huge canvas, the largest we'll have in the city of Milwaukee."
The city says there is a lot of work to be done between now and the end of the year, but they plan to keep holding community open houses to get continued feedback from residents as they move forward.
