MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As social media scams pose an increasing risk to consumers, experts say that heightened vigilance and awareness are more essential than ever.
Jim Temmer, President of the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau, discussed recommended guidelines on avoiding social media scams when he joined us on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Temmer emphasized the risks social media users face in today's interconnected world, citing impersonation, compromised accounts and online purchase scams as common tactics deployed by scammers.
To mitigate the risks, the BBB advises caution when receiving unsolicited messages containing links or offers. Verification through alternative means of communication is recommended. For online purchases, the use of a credit card is suggested as it offers better security measures for disputing unauthorized transactions.
Consumers are also advised to set their social media profiles to private. This restricts scammers from gathering information that can be used for personalized scams or identity theft.
More information can be found by visiting the BBB online.
