Wisconsin gets first transgender elected official

APPLETON -- 31-year-old Gypsy Vered Meltzer has become Wisconsin's first transgender elected official. Meltzer, who identifies as a male, was elected to the Appleton City Council on April 1, 2014.

Meltzer won the election for Alderperson by a margin of 295-199. Meltzer's opponent Barney Lemanski congratulated him via Facebook after the election was over.

Meltzer told the Appleton Post Crescent he's determined to keep the focus on political issues instead of himself. Meltzer will be representing Appleton's second district on the city council.
