Wisconsin state health officer receives national honor for leadership in public health

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Paula Tran, state health officer and administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Division of Public Health, has earned a spot on the de Beaumont Foundation's 2023 list of 40 Under 40 in Public Health leaders.

The announcement was made by the national nonprofit, which invests in public health solutions. They note that honorees are chosen for demonstrating attributes such as determination, commitment, innovation and resilience in the public health field.

Tran is among a select group chosen after a competitive nomination process and will participate in a two-year professional development program focusing on collaboration and growth within the public health sector.

"I'm honored to join this distinguished group of public health leaders who share my passion for and commitment to public health," said Tran in a press release announcing her honor.

"I look forward to partnering with and learning from similarly focused colleagues nationwide."

Tran has served in her current role with DHS since 2021. Prior to this, she has held various positions to advance public health and health equity, including as director for the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute’s Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health group.

"I have spent my career -- at the community level, in academia and in government -- highlighting the connection between community conditions and health outcomes," she added.
